Creating your own soap using natural ingredients can be a wonderful way to incorporate clean beauty practices into your skincare routine. Here's a simple recipe for a soap made with olive oil, coconut oil, and sunflower oil:
Ingredients:
- 300g olive oil
- 200g coconut oil
- 100g sunflower oil
- 70g sodium hydroxide (lye)
- 160ml distilled water
- Optional: essential oils for fragrance
Instructions:
1. Ensure you are working in a well-ventilated area and wear protective gloves and goggles.
2. In a heat-resistant container, carefully add the sodium hydroxide to the distilled water. Be cautious as it can cause a chemical reaction and release heat. Stir until the lye is completely dissolved. Set aside to cool.
3. In a separate container, combine the olive oil, coconut oil, and sunflower oil. Gently heat the oils until they reach a temperature of around 40-50°C (104-122°F).
4. Once the lye solution and oil mixture have cooled to around the same temperature (around 40-50°C), slowly pour the lye solution into the oil mixture. Stir continuously in one direction until the mixture reaches a light trace. This means that the mixture thickens slightly and leaves a faint trace when you lift the spoon out.
5. At this point, you can add a few drops of your chosen essential oils for fragrance. Stir well to distribute the fragrance evenly throughout the mixture.
6. Pour the soap mixture into soap molds or a lined loaf pan. Tap the molds gently on a flat surface to remove any air bubbles.
7. Cover the molds with a towel or plastic wrap to insulate them. Allow the soap to set and harden for about 24-48 hours.
8. After the initial setting period, remove the soap from the molds and place it on a drying rack or a piece of parchment paper.
9. Allow the soap to cure for around 4-6 weeks in a cool, dry place. During this time, the excess moisture will evaporate, resulting in a harder and longer-lasting bar of soap.
Remember, when working with lye, it's crucial to take proper safety precautions. Always handle it with care, wear protective gear, and keep it out of reach of children and pets. Enjoy your homemade olive oil, coconut oil, and sunflower oil soap, knowing that it's free from harsh chemicals and tailored to your skin's needs.
