How to Make Eco Friendly Beauty Products

7 Mins read

Would you believe me if I told you it’s possible to make eco-friendly beauty products in your kitchen?

They don’t cost a lot of money, they’re simple to make, and they’re easy to use: one little jar can last you years!

How to Make Eco-Friendly Beauty Products

Making your own beauty products is a great way to save money while ensuring you are not putting any harmful chemicals on your skin.

Using eco-friendly beauty products also helps reduce the amount of garbage you create, and it will help reduce the amount of chemicals that get washed down the drain and into our water supply.

Here are some tips to start making your own beauty products:

1. Opt for natural

Natural plant-based ingredients are more eco-friendly than synthetic ones, which are often petroleum-based and can be toxic to the environment.

Check the label of your beauty products – if they contain chemicals that you wouldn’t want to eat, it’s a good idea to find an alternative.

2. Avoid microbeads

Many face scrubs contain tiny beads made of plastic that wash down the drain when you wash your face and end up polluting the ocean.

Look out for products that use natural exfoliants instead – sugar or salt scrubs are a great alternative.

3. Go organic

The chemicals used in conventional farming can cause soil pollution and damage habitats for wildlife – but organically farmed crops don’t use these harmful pesticides and herbicides, so when you choose organic beauty products you’re helping to protect the earth too.

4. Choose unbleached cotton wool pads and tampons

The bleaching process used on cotton products releases dioxins into the air, which pollute our oceans and affect marine life – opt for unbleached alternatives where possible to help keep these chemicals out of our rivers and seas.

5. Use less plastic and more reusable containers

Use less plastic and more reusable containers when packaging products; try these eco-friendly options instead of styrofoam peanuts or other packaging materials: paper bags made from recycled materials (like newspaper) and biodegradable plastic wrap that breaks down naturally over time instead of sitting in landfills forever!

You’ll save money too because they cost less than traditional packaging options like Styrofoam or bubble wrap.

6. Get a Clean Base

Choose a base cream or lotion that does not contain any synthetic additives. Ingredients like sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), parabens, petroleum, and artificial fragrances can cause skin irritation, allergic reactions, or worse.

Look for creams with simple ingredients like shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil or beeswax as their base.

7. Choose Essential Oils

Essential oils are oils extracted from plants that have natural healing properties.

They are best used in homemade body lotions and facial moisturizers because they smell nice and have therapeutic effects on the skin.

Add just a few drops of essential oil to your homemade lotion or face cream for an added boost of health benefits!

8. Natural Scents

To make your products smell nice, choose essential oils and other natural scents like vanilla extract, cocoa powder, and coffee.

9. Use glass containers

In addition to being recyclable, glass is impermeable, which means that it won’t leak any harmful chemicals into your products.

Opt for amber-colored bottles as they will filter out the sun’s rays and keep your product from going bad.

10. Do not use plastic containers

The plastic used in most beauty containers can be toxic and harmful to your health.

Plastic also tends to absorb other substances (like the chemicals in beauty products), which means that it could potentially contaminate your products if you reuse the container for something else.

11. Purchase from a supplier who uses eco-friendly packaging

There are many suppliers that have committed to using eco-friendly packaging, so opt for them when possible.

In addition, choose a supplier who uses recycled packaging materials whenever possible.

12. Use eco-friendly labels

If you are making your own products, you don’t want to use paper or plastic labels that can’t easily be recycled or composted, so opt for labels made from 100% reclaimed pulp or recycled paper instead.

If you are having your products made by someone else, ask them to use an eco-friendly label on their products as well.

Can You Make Eco-Friendly Beauty Products in Your Kitchen?

Sure, you can make products at home, but you’ll need to be very careful to keep your working environment sterile.

The most important thing is to keep your tools, containers, and workspace clean and germ-free.

If you’re making a product that’s going to be used on your skin or hair, you should use a lot of sterile equipment to prevent contact with bacteria.

Stay away from the microwave for heating ingredients like waxes and oils; instead, use a double boiler.

There are tons of recipes out there for DIY beauty products — some better than others — but the biggest challenge is creating a product that’s truly “natural” and doesn’t contain potentially harmful synthetic additives.

To do so requires testing, knowledge of chemistry, and an understanding of what causes reactions in the skin.

I recommend buying organic raw materials from reputable suppliers and then adding them together yourself (along with preservatives) rather than trying to concoct everything from scratch. It’s much safer this way.

Where Can You Find Ingredients When Making Eco-Friendly Beauty Products?

I’ve been making beauty products for about 7 years now, and when I first started out, it was really difficult to find ingredients that weren’t full of toxic chemicals.

Nowadays, eco-friendly ingredients are becoming more mainstream and widely available. Here’s a list of the places I buy ingredients from – hopefully this helps!

1. Mountain Rose Herbs (US)

They have a huge selection of all kinds of herbs, essential oils, carrier oils, clays, waxes, and butter.

Shipping is free on orders over $75 and they also have some organic items. They also carry preservatives and packaging.

2. Bramble Berry (US)

This is one of the best shops in the US for soapmakers – they have a great variety of molds, essential oils and fragrance oils, lye, additives like glitter or exfoliants, and so on.

They also offer a great selection of dyes for soaps & bath salts.

3. Bulk Apothecary (US)

This is another one-stop-shop for soapmakers – you can find almost everything you need here including essential oils, carrier oils, waxes & butter, dyes/pigments for soaps as well as some natural colorants such as cocoa powder.

How Much Will It Cost You to Get All the Ingredients and Start Making Eco-Friendly Beauty Products?

For example, you can make your own shampoos for about $4 a bottle, your own facial scrubs for 50 cents a jar, and your own body butters for $3 a jar.

And that’s buying the highest quality ingredients from reputable suppliers (like Mountain Rose Herbs).

What Bottle Types Are Best for Storing Eco-Friendly Beauty Products?

If you are looking to store your eco-friendly beauty products in a way that is both convenient and sustainable then glass is the material of choice.

Glass bottles help keep your beauty products free from chemicals that can be leached from plastic.

Glass bottles are also easy to recycle, which means that even when you are finished with them they can be reused in other ways.

The most common type of glass bottle used for storing beauty products is the pump bottle or collared bottle.

You may recognize these as the type of bottles used for serums, lotions, and sometimes foundation.

These bottles are popular for their convenience and ease of use.

They can also be customized with colored caps and printing, making them perfect for branding.

Another great option for storing eco-friendly beauty products is a glass jar.

It’s very easy to find glass jars with bamboo lids or sugarcane lids that are 100% biodegradable!

These jars are perfect for creams and balms, especially those that need to be scooped out. Smaller jars can also work well as travel containers when you’re on the go!

How Long Does It Take to Make Eco-Friendly Beauty Products?

The initial product development process can take anywhere from 3 – 8 months, depending on the complexity of the product.

We try to keep it as simple and as quick as possible.

First, we have to choose what we want to make.

We start by selecting ingredients that are safe for humans and the environment and then create a formula that combines those ingredients in the right ratios to achieve the desired result.

The next step is testing and certification.

We test our formulas in-house, and we also send them out to independent labs for testing.

The testing is more complex than you might think because when we say Eco-Friendly, we mean it: our products have to be safe for people, animals, plants, and the planet.

We also use only natural preservatives (like honey or essential oils) which limits our options even further – there are many ingredients that are natural but not eco-friendly.

Once the formula is perfected, tested, and certified we can release it to the public!

The manufacturing process is much quicker. For example, if you order a bar of soap today it may take 2-3 weeks before you receive it by mail.

That gives us time to make it, package it and ship it out to your door!

Do Eco-friendly Beauty Products Work Better Than Traditional Products?

Whether or not eco-friendly beauty products work better than traditional products depends on the ingredients in the product.

A product that is eco-friendly will have natural ingredients, but the label cannot give any indication that it works better or worse than a traditional product.

If you want to try out an eco-friendly beauty product, read the label closely and see if it has a hypoallergenic label.

This means that the formula is less likely to cause allergic reactions.

Benefits of Eco-friendly Beauty Products

Eco-friendly beauty products are those beauty products that do not harm the environment in any way. They are often made from recycled materials and biodegradable packing.

Here is a list of the top benefits of eco-friendly beauty products:

1. Eco-friendly beauty products are safer for the environment.

2. Eco-friendly beauty products are better for human health.

3. They’re usually vegan and cruelty-free.

4. They’re often made with all-natural and organic ingredients.

5. They often contain fewer toxins and chemicals than traditional products and they’re sometimes free of preservatives, gluten, and other potentially harmful ingredients.

6. Many eco-friendly beauty products come in biodegradable packaging and/or recyclable containers which means less waste is created when using them (and less trash to throw away!)

7. Eco-friendly beauty products are often made from recycled materials and/or with renewable energy sources like solar or wind power which keeps our precious natural resources intact for longer periods of time than traditional manufacturing methods would allow us to do so (and therefore helps preserve them from being depleted too quickly).

8. Eco-friendly beauty products support sustainable farming practices by using only ethically sourced ingredients that will not harm the environment in any way (this includes not using animals as test subjects!). This means less harm done to wildlife habitats around our planet, which helps preserve biodiversity both on land and in water sources around Earth too!

Final Thoughts

While it’s really not hard to make your own natural beauty products, you will need some time and a few kitchen supplies to make them.

The upside is that the price for these homemade beauty products is at least 50% less than the cost of their commercial counterparts.

And if you want to impress your friends and family, why not give homemade beauty products a try?
