Is Honest Beauty Eco Friendly?

3 Mins read

Honest Beauty is PETA approved and cruelty-free- both very good things! But is it really eco-friendly?

Or is this just greenwashing, or a buzzword used by brands to make consumers feel better while they continue to create products that are unsustainable?

Hopefully, this article will answer these questions.

Is Honest Beauty Eco Friendly?

Honest Beauty is an eco-friendly brand. The company is cruelty-free and does not test on animals.

Honest Beauty’s shipping materials are recyclable and made with recycled paper. The brand uses recycled materials in its packaging, including PCR (Post Consumer Recycled) PET plastic.

Honest Beauty strives to reduce its carbon footprint by using renewable energy sources.

Is Honest Beauty Biodegradable?

Honest Beauty products have been formulated to be biodegradable, meaning that if the product ends up in the environment, it’s designed to break down over time.

However, their products contain preservatives and other ingredients that may need to be filtered out of water before it’s discharged into rivers, streams, or other bodies of water.

Their products are formulated without SLS and SLES (sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate) — common ingredients found in many personal care items. These ingredients are known to be toxic to aquatic life.

Their Shampoo and Conditioner also contain PEG-150 distearate, which is used as a thickener.

This ingredient is not biodegradable according to the OECD, but it is considered toxic to aquatic life only at very high concentrations (100 mg/L or greater).

If you’re concerned about being eco-friendly with your beauty routine, the brand recommends checking out the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep database for more information on the ingredients in their products.

Is Honest Beauty Clean Beauty?

Honest Beauty is clean beauty, meaning the brand uses safe ingredients to create products that don’t have harsh chemicals, synthetic fragrances, or artificial dyes.

Their products are formulated with ingredients that are free of parabens, formaldehyde donors, PEGs, phenoxyethanol, phthalates, and talc.

Does Honest Beauty Test on Animals?

To be clear, The Honest Company does not conduct animal testing on its products or ingredients, nor does it ask others to test on its behalf, except where required by law.

The decision to sell in mainland China is a careful and deliberate one made after very serious consideration and research – including discussions with leading NGOs.

Does Honest Beauty Use Recycled Material in Their Packaging?

Honest Beauty does not use recycled material for everything, but here’s a breakdown of where they do and where they don’t:

Honest Beauty Glass Jars and Bottles: 100% recycled glass

Lids for Honest Beauty Glass Jars and Bottles: 50% recycled plastic

Honest Beauty Plastic Tubes, Pumps, and Caps: 100% post-consumer recycled plastic

All Honest Beauty Paper Boxes: 100% recycled paperboard, made from the equivalent of more than 205 million milk jugs. Plus, their boxes are printed with soy-based ink.

Is Honest Beauty Packaging Sustainable?

Honest Beauty is owned by The Honest Company and they don’t seem to be interested in sustainable packaging.

The packaging is recyclable and they do have some post-consumer recycled content (PCR) in the paperboard boxes but there are no clear goals or commitments made on their website to move towards more sustainable packaging in the future.

Honest Beauty does list its suppliers for each of the ingredients and raw materials used in making its products. They also state that they use “sustainable” and “responsibly sourced” ingredients, however, these terms are not clearly defined.

Honest Beauty was recently acquired by L’Oreal which is a company that has been making strides in sustainability as well as improving its supply chain transparency so I am hopeful that we will see more initiatives like this with Honest Beauty moving forward.

Is Honest Beauty Packaging BPA Free?

Yes, Honest Beauty products are packaged in recyclable and safe materials that are BPA-free.

Final Thoughts

Honest Beauty is almost like a gateway brand to eco-friendly products because the company’s main goal with their products is to be pure and kind on your body. Is their makeup earth-friendly?

I would argue that it is, thanks to their packaging and lack of preservatives. Is their skincare eco-friendly? For best results and what seems like less harsh products, it depends on how you feel about organic oils.
