Cocoa butter has many benefits, one of which is its ability to protect the skin from the sun. In this recipe, we will show you how to make your own homemade cocoa butter sunscreen that is not only easy to make, but also all-natural.

Equipment

  • Double boiler or heat-proof bowl set over a pot of simmering water
  • A mixing bowl
  • Spatula
  • A container to store the sunscreen in

Ingredients
  

  • ¼ cup cocoa butter
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons beeswax
  • 2 tablespoons shea butter
  • ¼ cup almond oil
  • 2 tablespoons zinc oxide powder
  • 10-15 drops of essential oil of your choice (optional)

Instructions
 

  • Melt the cocoa butter, coconut oil, beeswax, and shea butter in a double boiler or heat-proof bowl set over a pot of simmering water.
  • Once the ingredients have melted, remove from heat and stir in the almond oil and zinc oxide powder.
  • Add in the essential oil if using.
  • Pour the mixture into a container and let it cool and solidify for about 30 minutes.
  • Once solidified, your sunscreen is ready to use.

Notes

  • Be sure to use zinc oxide powder, not zinc oxide cream, as the latter contains other ingredients that may not be suitable for sunscreen.
  • It is important to use a container that is heat-proof as the mixture will be hot when poured.
  • You can adjust the amount of zinc oxide powder to achieve the desired SPF level -The shelf life of this sunscreen is about 6 months.
 

How to Use

 
  1. Apply a small amount to the face,neck and exposed skin before sun exposure.
  2. Reapply every 2-3 hours or as needed.
